The GRTiQ 10: Julian Zawistowski (Ep. 193)

In a recent GRTiQ Podcast episode, Julian Zawistowski shared his thoughtful perspectives during the GRTiQ 10 segment, offering insights into his influences, values, and life philosophy.

Julian highlighted Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman as a profoundly impactful book. Written in the 1980s, the book resonates today by predicting the failures of public discourse and the pitfalls of social media long before its advent. For movies, he named Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola as a masterpiece. He also recommended Taylor Monahan’s talk from Devcon Osaka 2018, which delves into how web3 can compete with web2 while preserving its core values—an enduring and insightful discussion for the blockchain community.

When asked about music, Julian selected Profound Mystery Street by Röyksopp, a Norwegian electronic album that currently holds a special place in his rotation.

The best advice Julian ever received was to focus on doing rather than rationalizing why something shouldn’t be done. He acknowledged humanity’s tendency to find excuses but stressed the importance of action over analysis paralysis.

Julian shared a philosophical lesson: the Socratic idea, “I know that I know nothing.” While widely known, he emphasized the importance of truly remembering and embracing this mindset in daily life.

For his best life hack, Julian revealed his obsession with time management. He advocates estimating the time needed for tasks and resisting the urge to start too early, citing Parkinson’s Law: work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion.

Julian attributed success to the courage to focus on meaningful, non-trivial pursuits. While life is full of small, mundane tasks, he underscored the importance of stepping out of the ordinary to create something impactful.

The thing that most excites me about the future of web3 is… “Octant.”
If you’re on Twitter (X), you should be following… “You should quit Twitter.”
I’m happiest when… “I run.”
