The GRTiQ 10: James Hendler (Ep. 171)

In a recent episode of the GRTiQ Podcast, Dr. James Hendler, a prominent figure in AI and computer science, shared valuable insights from his life and career, touching on influences, advice, and his vision for the future.

When asked about the book or article that had the most impact on his life, Dr. Hendler emphasized the collective influence of science fiction on his thinking. While he couldn’t pinpoint a single book, he credited the genre with provoking deep thought about societal issues and future possibilities.

For a movie recommendation, Dr. Hendler suggested “2001: A Space Odyssey,” a film that significantly influenced a generation of AI researchers. The film’s dual focus on the potential of AI and human space exploration remains relevant and inspiring.

Dr. Hendler’s choice of music for a lifetime of listening would be a Beatles album, either “The White Album” or “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” reflecting his appreciation for timeless classics.

The best advice Dr. Hendler received was to “ignore them,” encouraging him to trust his instincts and make decisions based on his judgment rather than others’ opinions. This advice has guided his career and is something he now passes on to junior faculty.

A unique lesson Dr. Hendler learned from working with Tim Berners-Lee is the importance of questioning assumptions. This approach, he believes, is crucial for innovation and problem-solving in any field.

Dr. Hendler’s best life hack is learning to communicate complex technological concepts to non-experts. He believes that solving significant societal challenges will require scientists and technologists to effectively engage with the general public.

Reflecting on the habit or characteristic that leads to success, Dr. Hendler highlighted the importance of recognizing that you are not always the smartest person in the room. Surrounding oneself with smart, diverse thinkers and truly listening to them is key to personal and professional growth.

In the final segment, Dr. Hendler completed three sentences:

  1. The thing that most excites him about the future of AI is that its future is ours to make.
  2. For staying informed about AI trends, he recommends following a wide range of people and perspectives, not just those suggested by algorithms.
  3. He is happiest when his personal life, academic pursuits, and hobbies all come together harmoniously.
