The GRTiQ 10: Zac Burns (Ep. 148)

During a recent GRTiQ Podcast, Zac Burns provided listeners with a glimpse into his perspectives on life, personal influences, and insights that shape his daily decisions. The GRTiQ 10 is a weekly segment diving into the personal inspirations, influences, and insights of our guests, aiming to inspire listeners to discover new perspectives, embrace novel experiences, or achieve more in their lives.

Zac began by admitting that he doesn’t watch movies or TV shows very often, so he couldn’t recommend any. However, when it came to music, he chose the album “Everyday Life” by Coldplay. He enjoys this album because it’s like a musical journey that demands full attention, making it a unique and immersive experience.

A significant insight Zac shared was about programming and the misconception that high-performance software must be complicated. He emphasized that simplicity is key and often leads to better performance and efficiency. This principle of simplicity extends beyond programming and applies to various systems, highlighting the importance of reducing complexity to achieve better outcomes.

One of the best life hacks Zac discovered is to keep his phone out of reach. He explained that the phone, or “magic rectangle,” can be a major distraction, pulling attention away from meaningful activities and interactions. By limiting phone usage, he finds it easier to stay present and experience life more fully.

Reflecting on success, Zac believes that working hard on the right problems and collaborating with like-minded individuals are crucial factors. He also acknowledged the role of luck, noting that the world is more complex than we can fully grasp, and sometimes success comes from a combination of persistence and fortunate circumstances.

Zac expressed his excitement about web3, particularly the concept of “bring your own algorithm.” He explained that this approach allows users to control how data is processed and presented, rather than relying on centralized algorithms designed to maximize advertising revenue. This personalization can lead to a more informative and user-aligned experience.

Regarding social media, Zac mentioned that he is about to leave Twitter, indicating a shift away from traditional platforms.

Finally, Zac shared that his happiest moments are when he finds satisfying solutions to problems. The euphoria of solving a complex issue and confirming that the solution works brings him immense joy and fulfillment.
