The GRTiQ 10: Mickey Negus (Ep. 143)

During a recent GRTiQ Podcast, Mickey Negus provided listeners with a glimpse into his perspectives on life, personal influences, and insights that shape his daily decisions. The GRTiQ 10 is a weekly segment diving into the personal inspirations, influences, and insights of our guests, aiming to inspire listeners to discover new perspectives, embrace novel experiences, or achieve more in their lives.

Mickey began by discussing the books that had the most impact on his life, presenting a diverse selection that influenced him at different stages. “White Privilege” by Paula S. Rothenberg opened his eyes to inherent privileges he possesses as a white person. “The Whipping Girl” by Julia Serano helped him understand the experiences of trans women, especially as a close friend was transitioning. “The Alphabet Versus the Goddess” by Leonard Shlain, which he read in high school, explored the correlation between the rise of written language and patriarchal societies. Lastly, “The Renaissance Soul” by Margaret Lobenstine resonated with him as someone with many interests, helping him embrace his multifaceted nature.

For movie recommendations, Mickey suggested three titles. “Arrival” is a must-watch for fans of UFOs and alien narratives, praised for its captivating storyline and ending. “Jury Duty” is a hysterical show on Prime that he highly recommends without giving away spoilers. Finally, “Drive to Survive,” a Netflix series about Formula 1, not only fueled his passion for F1 but also provided valuable lessons in management and giving opportunities to early career individuals.

Musically, Mickey’s top choices were “The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance and “Artificial Selection” by Dance Gavin Dance. These albums represent his most played and cherished music.

The best advice Mickey ever received was to “always assume positive intent.” This principle shapes his approach to interactions and helps maintain a positive outlook.

Mickey shared a significant insight about the value of being a generalist. Contrary to the belief that specializing in one thing is essential for success, he emphasized that generalists are incredibly valuable and often make excellent leaders.

A notable life hack Mickey discovered involves using Slack reminders to manage tasks. By setting reminders for messages and only marking them as complete when done, he stays organized amidst the whirlwind of activity. He also stressed the importance of prioritizing self-care, taking breaks, and maintaining physical and mental health.

Reflecting on success, Mickey believes that staying curious and asking questions are key characteristics. This habit fuels continuous learning and growth, essential for achieving success.

Mickey expressed his excitement about web3, particularly the potential for pioneering decentralized support. This aspect of web3 aligns with his passion for innovative and collaborative solutions.

For social media followers, Mickey recommended following The Graph and Edge & Node’s accounts on X (formerly Twitter). He also praised the House of web3 account on Instagram for its entertaining content.

Finally, Mickey shared that his happiest moments are when he finishes a productive week of work and decompresses on weekends by hiking with his husband and dog or reading a book. These activities bring him immense joy and relaxation.
