The GRTiQ 10 is a weekly Q&A segment that wraps up every episode of the GRTiQ Podcast, offering listeners a fun and personal look at each guest. Through ten thoughtfully crafted questions, guests reveal their favorite books, music, and life hacks, share impactful advice, and reflect on their vision for the future. Designed to uncover what inspires and motivates them, the GRTiQ 10 provides practical takeaways and fosters a deeper connection between listeners and guests.
In a recent GRTiQ Podcast episode, Riad Wahby joined the GRTiQ 10 segment, providing a fascinating glimpse into the influences and philosophies that have shaped his career and personal journey.
Riad credited Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier as the book that sparked his lifelong interest in cryptography and cypherpunk culture, though he humorously cautioned against using it as a modern reference. For movies, he enthusiastically recommended Sneakers, a heist film he believes offers the best portrayal of real hacking. On music, Riad selected The Purple Album by Baroness as his enduring favorite, praising its unique blend of acid rock and metal.
The best advice Riad received came from his father, a surgeon, who always said, “Be careful.” This advice shaped Riad’s meticulous approach to life and work, teaching him the value of slowing down to get things right. He also shared a quirky tidbit from his career—a deep knowledge of Bellcore telephone standards, gained while working on landline telephony products, a topic most people likely overlook.
Riad’s go-to life hack involves using music to induce a state of focus and productivity. Whether it’s Baroness or The Flaming Lips, music helps him enter a flow state and tackle tasks efficiently. For success in life, Riad emphasized the importance of persistence and stubbornness, particularly in academic and technical challenges, where resilience often leads to breakthroughs.
The thing that most excites me about the future of Web3 is… “Real applications that attract everyday users for practical purposes, like buying concert tickets or sports event passes.”
If you’re on X (formerly Twitter), you should be following… “William Gibson (@GreatDismal) for his engaging and thought-provoking insights.”
I’m happiest when… “I’m writing code, solving problems, and entering a flow state of deep focus.”
