During a recent GRTiQ Podcast, Maarten Henskens provided listeners with a glimpse into his perspectives on life, personal influences, and insights that shape his daily decisions. The GRTiQ 10 is a weekly segment diving into the personal inspirations, influences, and insights of our guests, aiming to inspire listeners to discover new perspectives, embrace novel experiences, or achieve more in their lives.
Maarten started by admitting that he isn’t an avid reader of books. Instead, he prefers to read research papers to educate himself on topics of interest. He mentioned buying “The Fourth Turning” by William Strauss and Neil Howe but found more enjoyment in spending time with his wife than reading. He emphasized the importance of reading to improve knowledge in specific areas rather than just for leisure.
For movie recommendations, Maarten highlighted two favorites from the ’90s: “Dangerous Minds” and “Forrest Gump.” “Dangerous Minds” resonates with him because of its themes of teaching and dealing with diversity, reflecting his own life’s variety. He compared the unpredictability and determination of Forrest Gump to the world of crypto, where chasing dreams and perseverance are crucial.
When it comes to music, Maarten’s choice is the album “Legendary Sessions” by Chet Baker and Bill Evans. He enjoys the calming, instrumental sounds of the trumpet and piano, finding them perfect for relaxation and focus.
The best advice Maarten ever received came from his father, who emphasized the importance of improving the lives of those who come after you. This principle of leaving a positive mark on the world, whether in family or broader society, has guided Maarten throughout his life.
Maarten shared a profound experience from his time as a long-distance cyclist. During a grueling 4,000-kilometer ride from Florence, Italy, to the North Cape, he pushed his physical and mental limits, meeting himself in challenging moments. This experience taught him the importance of self-discovery and pushing boundaries.
A unique life hack Maarten discovered is dancing. Whenever he feels down, he dances in a common area, which lifts his spirits and recharges his motivation. His wife sometimes joins in or laughs, but the act of dancing brings him joy and energy.
Reflecting on success, Maarten believes that challenging oneself is key. Whether it’s mastering a new technology, cooking a new recipe, or pushing personal limits, embracing challenges leads to growth and success.
Maarten expressed his excitement about web3, particularly the unknown possibilities it holds. The potential for innovation and change in this space is what keeps him engaged and motivated.
For social media, Maarten recommended following “Cycling Out of Context” on X (formerly Twitter), which shares humorous and engaging content about cycling.
Finally, Maarten shared that he is happiest after experiencing something new. The thrill of new experiences and the learning they bring contribute significantly to his sense of fulfillment.
